CSEC submits response to Consultation on New Nuclear Plans for Hinkley Point, Somerset

Date: 31 January 2011

CSEC's Social Studies of Nuclear Policy Research Group has recently submitted a response to the consultationby West Somerset Council on Electricite De France's (EDF's) proposal for planning permission for 'site preparation works' at Hinkley Point, Somerset.

CSEC had 2 main points to make:

1. EDF present the case for 'site preparation works' to be carried out at Hinkley Point, Somerset. The plans involve: the removal of the majority of trees and hedges; the stripping of topsoil and vegetation to make a terraced area for the proposed nuclear reactors; the re-routing underground streams; the excavation of millions of cubic metres of soil, sub-soil and rocks; the construction of a jetty out into the sea. We believe that these proposals are wholly inadequate in ecological terms andin terms of best practice for Environmental Impact Assessment. In addition such proposalsare highly problematic because they presuppose that a new reactor will be built at Hinkley, a development that has not gone through government planning procedures or adequate public consultation.

2. The process via which public views about the 'site preparation works' can be made is inadequate because of the very great difficulty that any member of the public would have in accessing clear, complete and relevant information. We believe that this process is in breach of the Aarhus Convention.

Our response can be found on the CSEC website.
