Research Interests

My research interests include computer supported collaborative/cooperative learning (CSCL), research methods for e-learning, interculture issues (e.g. comparative studies), professional development, networked learning communities, and knowledge building.

I am currently working on eChina~UK project, which is exploring the interculture pedagogy issues in e-learning field. I also participated in EQUEL project, which was funded by EU.

I undertook "Networked-based Collaborative Learning: Theories and Practices" project which was funded by National Educational Scientific Commission (NESC), China for "Ten-Five" Educational Research Planning as a leading applicant and coordinator of this project. The purposes of this project are to explore the fundamental theories, strategies, and principles of online collaborative learning. More than 30 experimental schools were engaged in this project from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Marco.

I undertook "Chinese WISE Project" which cooperated with California University (Berkeley). I was one of the coordinators and researchers in this project. The main purpose of this project was to explore how Chinese students learnt science in the online WISE environment. "Distance Collaborative Learning via Internet" (DISCOL) project was another cooperative project with Singapore MOE (Ministry Of Education) which I undertook. The purpose of this project was to explore how to use online collaborative learning through internet.

Career details

I am a researcher of educational technology (e-learning) and have been involved in the field since the late of 1980s. I am currently a research associate at CSALT (Centre for Studies of Advanced Learning Technology), Department of Educational Research. I am working for eChina~UK project at this moment as a project manager.

I was working in the United Nations University (UNU), Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS), Tokyo, Japan and cooperated with the Centre for Research and Development of Educational Technology, Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) from 2000 to 2001. I was also a visiting researcher in National Institute of Multimedia in Education (NIME), Japan, in 2001.

I had been working as a practitioner for Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in Linyi Teachers' University, China. After I graduated from MA and PhD studying, I was working in School of Information Technology in Education (SITE), South China Normal University (SCNU), as an Associate Professor. I was a director of National training Centre for design and development of Multimedia Instructional Software (NCMIS), China. More than 3000 trainees (teachers coming from higher education and schooling field) successfully got their Training Certificates from NCMIS.

Teaching

The courses I had taught in SITE, SCNU include:

Undergraduate courses: Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Information Technology in Education, Research Methods of Educational Technology, Online Learning, Computer in Education, Multimedia Instructional Software: Design and Development, and Intelligent Tutoring System.

Postgraduate courses: Research on Educational Technology, Research Methods, Computer in Education, Instructional Media, Communication and Instruction, Online Learning and Teaching, Learning Theories, and Computer Supported Collaborative/Cooperative Learning (CSCL).

I was also working for professional development and help higher education and school teachers to improve their professional and practical skills. Some courses include: Theory and Methods of Multimedia Instruction, Design and Development of Multimedia Instructional Software, and Application of Computer Programme.

I undertook some research projects related to teaching in higher education and school field, such as the Survey on ICT in Schools within Pearl River Delta, Computer Supported Collaborative Learning in Higher Education, and ICT in Chinese Schools.

Honours and Rewards

I awarded "National Reward for Excellent Students Studying Outside of China" (NERSO) from Chinese Council in April 2005.

The paper "student modelling in web-based collaborative learning system" which presented in GCCCE2001 awarded "Excellent Research Paper" in July 2001, Taiwan.

I awarded "PhD Research Fellowship" for excellent global young scholars from the United Nations University, Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU/IAS) in 2000, Tokyo, Japan
