Aims and Objectives

The main focus of the research is the varying ways in which different groups will frame the potential of any new genomic technology. Some will no doubt see it as presenting great hope, but for others it will present great risk. By exploring how these frames are shared and developed by different groups and organisations the research will map how the alliances that promote and oppose new genomic technologies are themselves built up over time. In particular the research will:

  • Identify the key scientific, regulatory and activist communities that are seeking to shape the development of genomic technologies
  • Document the opportunities and threats that each of these groups see or anticipate new genomic technologies as realising
  • Describe the 'proto-politics' through which these issues combine and surface in a public debate
  • Explore the outcomes of these activities for the public acceptability and commercial development of specific genomic technologies.

The research will thus make a significant contribution to CESAGen's work on public engagement and globalisation.
