Looking at Language Variation
using WordSmith Concord

Today will be looking at two forms of variation:

  1. historical variation, comparing British English (BrE) in the 1960s with BrE in the 1990s
  2. regional variation, comparing BrE with American English (AmE).

To do this we will be learning more about the main concordance operations:

  • searching for words and phrases
  • sorting the concordance lines
  • identifying collocates

Categories in LOB/FLOB/Brown/Frown

Historical change: the modal verb "shall"
