Creating Accessible Websites

Dealing With Flash and Shockwave

• Flash and Shockwave are inaccessible to screen readers and should be used with care. Users may be reluctant to download plugins. Users of assistive technology may not be able to access it. Flash MX offers greater scope for accessibility than its predecessors.

• Do not set buttons or links within a Flash or Shockwave element.

• Provide "skip" link so that users do not have to wait for the element to end.

• Provide the content in an alternative format.

• Provide a means for users to switch off or skip animations - some users may find moving objects disturbing and they have been known to trigger epileptic fits so try to warn your users in advance.
