What you need to know on your graduation day.

Graduation 'On the day' information

When you collect your graduation tickets in June 2016, you will find enclosed a Graduation Day Leaflet with a campus map, indicating the location of all Graduation Day activities.  You will also be able to download the iLancaster App for a quick overview of Graduation Day information for students and guests.

Arrival on campus

Two hours before your ceremony, please arrive on campus and make your way to collect your robes. No parking charges operate on Graduation Day so you can park for free in any marked space on campus, except Blue Badge spaces, for which you must hold and display a valid Blue Badge. For further information on parking spaces please see our campus map.  If spaces near to the Great Hall are full, you may wish to drop off guests opposite the Chaplaincy Centre and park elsewhere.

Gown collection

Please ensure you have ordered your academic dress from the University's official supplier Ede and Ravenscroft prior to your graduation.

On your graduation day, you will need to collect your gown from the LICA building.

Gowns will be available for collection on the day of your graduation and must be returned on the same day. Gown collection and close times will be updated here in due course. 

Lining up for your ceremony

One hour before your ceremony, you must report to your lining up venue in the Great Hall, leaving personal items such as handbags with your guests.

Details of lining up venues will be included in the leaflet with your tickets.

It is important that you get to your lining up venue on time as during 'lining up', you will be:

  • Briefed on how the ceremony will run
  • Briefed on what you will need to do and when
  • You will be put into processional order
  • You will be given your name card (from which your name will be read on stage)

About 20 minutes before your cermeony start time and when lining up is completed, you will process with your fellow graduands into the Great Hall in front of your guests who will already be seated.

Your Guests

Your guests should arrive to be ushered to their seats one hour before the ceremony begins. All guests will have a ticket with an allocated seat number. Guests need to be in their seats at the very latest, 20 minutes before the ceremony start time to watch the graduands process into the hall. 

The ceremony

One hour before the ceremony start time:

  • The Great Hall will be opened
  • Guests take their seats. 

30 minutes before the ceremony start time:

  • With the majority of guests in their seats, the Master of Ceremonies will make a number of important announcements to the guests including on what they will need to know and do during the ceremony. 

20 minutes before the ceremony start time:

  • Guests will be in their seats
  • The graduands procession will enter the hall from their lining up venues 

At the ceremony start time: 

  • The academic procession enters the hall
  • The ceremony is formally opened
  • The ceremony will last around one hour
  • During the ceremony graduands and guests should follow the directions of Marshals who will guide you through what you should be doing and when.

Live Webcast

We offer a live webcast of each ceremony on Graduation Day. 

Guests without tickets to the ceremony can watch the ceremony live on big screens in the Faraday Building. This venue is staffed and fully accessible, with Degree Day programmes available on request.  No tickets are required for the live broadcast venue.

Studio photography

Lancaster University's Print & Photography are the official University photographers and will have their sales and studio area conveniently located adjacent to the gowning area in LICA. College photography 

There will be a college photograph taken in Lancaster Square of each college either before or after their ceremony. Please see below in due course for the times of each college photograph and at the time listed, make your way to the photography standings in Lancaster Square.

Food and drink on campus 

There are various outlets on campus which are open during graduation week and these will be listed here nearer the time.
