AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award

Date: 11 June 2012

Dr Corinna Peniston-Bird has received a Collaborative Doctoral Award from the AHRC for the project 'Vision and Practice: the Westfield War Memorial Village, Lancaster, 1918 to the Present.' The Westfield War Memorial Village, on West Road Lancaster, was founded in 1924 to provide accommodation and employment for disabled ex-servicemen. The project, which Dr Peniston-Bird will direct in conjunction with Mrs Amanda Stretch of the Westfield War Memorial Village Trust, will result in a PhD that will be the first full-length study of this unique site.

AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award at Lancaster University

Applications are invited for a fully funded AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award to be held at Lancaster University in conjunction with Westfield Memorial Village, Lancaster. The aim of the doctoral research is to study the vision and practice of the village from conception to the present.

The award is a partnership between the Department of History and the Westfield War Memorial Village, and the PhD will be supervised by Dr Corinna Peniston-Bird (Lancaster) and Mrs Amanda Stretch, the administrator and curator of the Westfield Village. The Village is one of the only functional war memorials providing segregated housing in the aftermath of the First World War which survives in that form to the present day. This award will provide the opportunity for the doctoral student to gain firsthand experience of work outside an academic environment, as well as the academic and financial resources required to achieve a PhD locating the history of the Village in the context of British social history.

The deadline for applications is 17 August, 2012. Please send a CV and letter of application outlining your suitability for the role and a full CV including educational qualifications to Mrs Ghislaine O'Neill, Postgraduate Administrator, Department of History, Lancaster University LA1 4YT, or g.oneill@lancaster.ac.uk. Enquiries about the project should be addressed to c.peniston-bird@lancaster.ac.uk.
