Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP)

The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) is an in-service programme designed to support and accredit the academic development of a range of staff who teach and support student learning at Lancaster, including:

The taught programme is divided into two linked modules, PGCAP Module 1: Developing Higher Education Practice (DHEP) and PGCAP Module 2: Curriculum Design and Development (CDD), both @ 30 level 7 credits.

Timetable for PGCAP programme in 2014/15

PGCAP Module leaders will use your registration form to determine which route is most appropriate given your prior HE teaching experience. Please fill in the registration form as completely as possible to help tutors with this process.

The deadline for returning this form is: Monday 1st September 2014 *REGISTRATIONS FOR 2014-15 ARE NOW CLOSED*

These workshops are usually held in the teaching rooms in the HR Building (located between University House and the Chaplaincy Centre).

A complete timetable for the programme sessions will be sent to successful applicants according to route, but key dates are:

PG Certificate in Academic Practice: Module 1:
Developing Higher Education Practice (DHEP)
  • For early career academics (with less than 3 years teaching experience in an academic role)
  • Attendance requirements
  • A one and a half day induction workshop on either:
    Tuesday 23rd September 9:30-4:00pm and Wednesday 24th September 9:30-12:30pm
    Thursday 25th September 9:30-4:00pm and Friday 26th September 9:30-12:30pm
  • A teaching practice session in small groups on one of the 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th October, 9:30-12:30pm to be arranged at induction event
  • Future sessions in Michaelmas term taking place on alternate weeks on either Tuesday or Thursday mornings 9:30-11:00am:
    Tuesdays 21st October, 4th and 18th November, 2nd December
    Thursdays 23rd October, 6th and 20th November, 4th December
  • Sessions in Lent term 2015 take place on alternate weeks, either Tuesday or Thursday mornings - times shown below:
    13th January 9:30-11:00am, 27th January 9:30-12:30pm
    10th and 24th February 9:30-11:00am
    10th March 9:30-11:00am, 17th March 9:30-12:30pm
    15th January 9:30-11:00am, 29th January 9:30-12:30pm
    12th and 26th February 9:30-11:00am
    12th March 9:30-11:00am, 19th March 9:30-12:30pm
  • Deadline for submission of assessment will be 1st May 2015
  • PG Certificate in Academic Practice: Module 1:

    (Experienced Route)
  • For experienced academics with three or more years teaching experience in a full academic role. This option is only available as a route onto PG CAP Module 2 (CDD)
  • Attendance requirements
  • Induction event Wednesday 1st October 9:30-4:00pm
  • Future sessions taking place on Tuesday afternoons 1:30-3:30pm on alternate weeks (3,5,7 & 9):

    Curriculum Design & Development (CDD)

  • For anyone who has successfully completed the PG Certificate in Academic Practice Module 1: Developing Higher Education Practice
  • Attendance requirements
  • Two day induction on:
    6th and 7th January 2015 9:30-4:00pm
  • Three 2 hour sessions in the afternoons of alternate weeks 1:30-3:30pm:
    Tuesdays 27th January, 10th and 24th February
    Thursdays 29th January, 12th and 26th February
  • Dissemination of good practice events 9:30-3:30pm on:
    Tuesday 21st and 28th April or
    Thursday 23rd and 30th April
  • Participants will need to attend for part of the day:
    Tuesday 5th May or
    Thursday 7th May
  • Assessment event, 3 hour session during the day, times tbc:
    Tuesday 19th or 26th May
    Thursday 21st or 28th May
  • Module review and CAP Alumni event 9:30-3:30pm on:
    Tuesday 2nd June or
    Thursday 4th June
  • If you wish to apply for a place on CAP for 2014-15 please complete this registration form which includes a letter of agreement for your HoD to sign.
