PGR supervision at Lancaster: foundations of good practice

New for 2015/16 and in line with Lancaster’s strategic aspirations around postgraduate research, the ‘Foundations of Good Practice Programme’ provides a structured development route for those needing to understand the regulations surrounding PGR supervision.

Who is it for?

This programme is designed for those new to supervision, those that may have supervised at other HEIs but are new to working at Lancaster and those colleagues who wish to refresh their knowledge of local procedures and good practice.

Programme structure

The programme consists of three, related workshops which follow the lifecycle of a PhD:

1. Recruitment, relationship forming and progression through year 1

2. Maintaining momentum

3. Examination and the viva

These workshops can be attended on a stand-alone basis.

PHD supervision sharing practice event series

This series covers cross-cutting themes relevant to supervision at Lancaster. Each event is dedicated to a particular topic, run by supervisors, for supervisors and designed to facilitate the sharing of practice and internal expertise.

Who is it for?

The series is open to all supervisors across the institution (experienced and new).

Event structure

Each of these termly events is approximately 2 hours in length (over a working lunch) and typically consists of a short piece of input from two supervisors to stimulate discussion. The following topics are the basis of the event series in 2015/16:

Topic 1: our diverse PhD students: implications for supervision

Topic 2: efficiency as well as quality: managing your supervision load
