Enhancing PGR supervision
In line with Lancasterís strategic aspirations around postgraduate research, these opportunities offer structured development for those wishing to enhance their PGR supervisory practice.
Foundations of good practice
These one-day workshops explore good practice in relation to the lifecycle of a PhD and in the context of Lancasterís regulations.
Who is it for?
The workshops are designed for those new to PGR supervision, those that may have supervised at other HEIs but are new to working at Lancaster and those who wish to refresh their knowledge of local procedures and good practice.
This interactive workshop will cover regulations and good practice in relation to the lifecycle of a PhD helping you to recruit the best students and ensure that all students complete on time and make significant research contributions. The session will cover:
- The importance of getting the right partnership including how to attract and recruit the best student, how to set clear and reasonable expectations and jointly devise a feasible research plan to maximise research impact.
- How to create a stimulating research environment to inspire and motivate your students and the importance of monitoring and constructive feedback to maintain momentum.
- How to select suitable examiners and prepare your students to survive their viva and secure future employment.
Sessions will be led by Professor Judith Williams and Dr Rachel Cowen, experienced academic developers from the University of Manchester sourced via Vitae. A range of internal colleagues are also involved in contributing.
