International PartnersIAS Partner Institutions Exchange Scheme - Call for applicationsThe University has renewed its support for institutional exchanges. The IAS is the vehicle for these in FASS and proposals for exchanges with existing partner institutions (JNU, NUS, Jagiellonian, and Hitotsubashi) are invited. Those interested should contact the Director, Bob Jessop, in the first instance. Funding is for bilateral exchanges with one visitor travelling in each direction with a view to establishing longer-term, self-sustaining departmental or institutional collaborations – it is not intended for purely interpersonal cooperation. Further details will be announced in due course.
Capacity Building Exchange Scheme with Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, IndiaThe IAS was successful in its application for a £6000 grant from the British Council in India for a capacity-building exchange between Lancaster University and the Jawaharhlal Nehru University in New Delhi. The themes identified for the exchange were government, governance, and governmentality (a key interdisciplinary research cluster in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) and post-colonial history (a key theme in JNU's flagship Centre for Historical Studies). In the first round of the exchange, in August 2006, the Director, Professor David Sugarman (Law), and Dr Ngai-Ling Sum (Politics) visited JNU for a series of lectures and seminars hosted primarily by JNU’s Centre for Law and Governance. Bob Jessop delivered a lecture on Governance Failure, David Sugarman on ‘Prosecuting Pinochet and the Global Quest for Justice’, and Ngai-Ling Sum spoke on corporate social responsibility in Southern China. Bob Jessop also delivered a lecture in the Centre for Modern History on recent developments in the state and state theory; and all three participants held informal workshops with graduate students and interested members of staff. The return visit occurred in September 2006, with a joint visit by Professor Aditya Mukherjee, Chair of the Centre for Historical Studies, and Professor Mridula Mukherjee, Professor of Modern Indian History and Director of the Nehru National Museum and Library. Their programme involved two lectures, one colloquium, and one workshop, on indian history, historiography, and subaltern studies with broad relevance to historians and other social scientists. Mridula Mukherjee delivered a lecture on ‘Non-Violent Revolution: Peasant Resistance and Subaltern Theory’, Aditya Mukherjee spoke on ‘Post-Colonial History and “Post-Colonial” History: Reflections on “Post-Colonialism” and Modern Indian History’, and there was a workshop on Problems of Historiography and Periodization (with brief introductions by Profs Aditya and Mridula Mukherjee, and Bob Jessop). This workshop explores problems of historical analysis and models of explanation in the historical and social sciences. The IAS is pleased to report that Professor Aditya Mukherjee has been appointed as the Director of the Institute of Advanced Study at JNU and this will consolidate exchanges. Other FASS visitors to JNU include Dr Deborah Sutton, Dr Paul Fletcher, and Professor Chakravarthi Ram-Prasad. |
