Transforming or Transacting the Back Office? The Role of Outsourcing in the Knowledge Based Organisations

2 February 2006

Please note, this research programme has now concluded and these pages are maintained here as a record of the activities of the Institute for Advanced Studies.

Co-ordinators: Dr Anthony Hesketh (Lancaster) and Professor Andrew Kakabadse (Cranfield)

Love it or hate it, outsourcing is at the top of the contemporary business agenda. To some it is a quick fix to flagging and ailing workforces in need of an injection of new entrepreneurial spirit. For others, it's simply the relocation back to where they belong of administrative or "back office" business processes through the sophisticated application of software applications. Where some see development, engagement and performance enhancement, others see exploitation, arbitration and offshoring. What evidence can recent research shed on our understanding of the transformational capacities of business process outsourcing?
