"Crisis? What Crisis?"

(The infamous Sun headline fashioned from the actual words by British Labour Prime Minister Jim Callaghan during the Winter of Discontent 1978/79)

The Multiple World Crisis - The Great Crises of Our Day and Their Aftermath

A Lecture and Seminar Series of the Institute for Advanced Studies, Lancaster University
May 2009 – April 2010

Since the autumn of 2008, we have been in a Great World Crisis, turning rapidly from an international financial crisis into a world depression that has the potential to surpass in scale and scope the previous Great Crises and Depressions in the history of modern capitalism.

From May 2009 to April 2010, the IAS is organising a series of lectures and seminars to analyse and debate the multiple world crises we are in. With participants from many disciplines, bringing together academic specialists, economic and political actors, we will endeavour to make sense of the highly complex mix of unfolding crisis events and to scrutinise the ways out of our present predicament – looking backwards into the roots of time as well forward towards the aftermath of the Great Crisis of our times.

The lecture and seminar series will be opened on 14 May 2009 by the inaugural lecture of the new director of the IAS, Professor Michael Krätke, on the “Meaning of Crisis”. It will be continued in four consecutive rounds during the months to come, dealing with the meanings and impacts of the present crisis, the complexities of a multiple crisis, including the environmental crisis and the crisis of the prevailing (neo)liberal belief systems, the crisis of global governance and the various attempts to overcome the crisis . Eventually, we will have a closer look at the aftermaths of the present crisis or at capitalism’s futures.
