Admin Rights for Staff

For University owned Windows computers (desktops and laptops) there are three different levels of admin rights access.

The standard setup for computers is shown in level 2 below, where software that is not centrally provided by ISS can be installed by staff by requesting temporary admin rights from the ISS Service Desk.

Temporary admin rights are available for 24hours then removed, and staff should only install the software they requested. ISS performs scans to ensure that this is the case.

Please note: If you are in HR, Finance or SBS you are not able to request admin rights, so if you require a piece of software installing please complete the relevant software request form and (if appropriate) a technician will install this for you.

We make a large number of applications available by AppsAnywhere. Using AppsAnywhere you can run applications without requiring admin rights to install them on your computer. You can see applications that are available on AppsAnywhere in our software catalogue

1. No admin rights

This is the most secure type of computer and will be used in areas such as HR, SBS and Finance where staff are accessing sensitive data. By having no admin rights, users are significantly reducing the risk of accidentally downloading malware.

  • We centrally manage and provide a set of software applications on your computer.
  • We make updates and changes to this software.
  • We make a limited number of other software applications available for you to install.
  • You cannot install additional software, but will be able to access other software applications via AppsAnywhere .

2. Temporary admin rights

This is a secure type of computer, but carries an increased risk of downloading malware. If you have temporary admin rights and are concerned about the software you are downloading, please contact the ISS Service Desk.

  • We centrally manage and provide a set of software applications on your computer.
  • We make updates and changes to this software.
  • We make a limited number of other software applications available for you to install.
  • You can request temporary admin rights for 24 hours in order to install additional specific, agreed software applications.

3. Permanent admin rights

This is the most insecure type of computer and it is the responsibility of the user to ensure that the computer remains secure. By having permanent admin rights, users are significantly increasing the risk of accidentally downloading malware.

  • We don’t centrally manage the software on your computer - you are responsible for it.
  • You have admin rights to install software applications.
