North West Centre for Languages and Cultures
In the past, the Department of Languages and Cultures delivered events for the Routes into Languages consortium. We have held several Language Enrichment Events such as ‘Essay Writing on Film’ workshops in German and Spanish as well as language taster sessions for KS4 in Latin, Mandarin, Italian and Chinese calligraphy.
We are now affiliated with the North West Centre for Languages and Cultures. It is a consortium of universities working together with schools and colleges to enthuse and encourage students to study languages.
The NWCLC aims to enhance the subject knowledge of language teachers and to encourage and promote the study of languages in a wide range of modern foreign languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Portuguese and Spanish. University partners (Pembroke College/Oxford University, Manchester University, University of Liverpool and UCLAN) with the help of the administrative centre at Winstanley College will support targeted languages and cultures in the North West through the provision of peer-to-peer networks, subject activities and cultural enrichment events for students.
The first event of 2016/17 for A-level students took place on Thursday, 15th December at Winstanley College, Wigan. The theme was 'Spanish and French culture' with taster sessions in other languages.
The second event in this series will take place on Tuesday, 4th April 2017 at Lancaster University.
