DELC210: MLang Year Abroad
The Year Abroad in the second year of the MLang degree is a required element of this scheme of study. Students spend the academic year studying at a partner university. Preparation for the Year Abroad is provided by the department with the non-credit bearing module DELC200 during the first year and in the Year Abroad preparation week in Summer Term of Year 1, which MLang students are required to attend.
MLang students study in universities with which DeLC has Erasmus+ links. They attend courses and sit examinations at the host institution for 45-48 ECTS (credits) for a full year and 22-24 ECTS for half a year (if splitting the Year Abroad between two countries). This is equivalent to 90 Lancaster University credits.
Students study a combination of language and culture courses on offer at the host institution, chosen with guidance from the Year Abroad Tutor in the language studied. This selection must promote the development of (and provide assessment of) the target Language(s) at an appropriate level (CEFR B2/C1) and promote the development of (and provide assessment of) intercultural study at Level 5 (i.e. Modules made available to students should be roughly equivalent to academic level 5 in the UK system). By the end of the module, students will be firmly established at a CEFR B2 level and begin to operate at an advanced effective operational proficiency, or C1 level.
The Year Abroad will be supervised by the Year Abroad Tutor and a tutor in the partner institution(s).
