Christiana Markou

Director of C. Markou & Co LLC.

Born in 1977 in Nicosia, Cyprus, I hold an LL.B (Hons.) from the University of Sheffield (UK) and an LL.M in International, Commercial and European Law from the same university. I was called to the Cyprus Bar Association in 2001 after passing the relevant examination in 12 different areas of Cyprus law with honours in 2000. I am also a holder of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Lancaster (UK).

My thesis was on EU cyber consumer law. From 2000 I practiced law as an associate in a major Cypriot law firm until the end of 2005 when I set up C. MARKOU & CO LLC, a Nicosia law office of which I am the sole director and supervisor. I mainly deal with European law, Corporate Law, Personal Injury, Consumer Protection and IT/E-Commerce law, though I have sufficient knowledge of other areas of law.

I have been the Cypriot Correspondent of the EU Consumer Law Compendium, a major EU-funded project reviewing 8 EU Directives in the area of European Consumer Law. I also took the initiative for and co-managed the establishment of the IT Law Special Interest Group of the Cyprus Computer Society, which has organized conferences and seminars aimed at educating lawyers, judges and other interested parties in the newly-emerged area of IT/computer law.

Furthermore, I have organized and spoken at conferences including seminars and workshops on IT law-related topics. From 2012-2013, I was holding a part-time teaching post at the European University Cyprus and the University of Nicosia. Since October 2013, I have held a lecturer post at the European University Cyprus teaching EU Private International Law, EU Consumer Law, and EU Internal Market Law. I publish mainly in the areas of EU consumer law and EU data protection & privacy law.
