After two years of post-doctoral research with Ian Dodd and Elizabete Carmo-Silva, Ivan Jauregui is leaving LEC and will be taking on a new post-doc in Liege, Belgium. Before he goes, Ivan is going to present a farewell Plant and Crop Sciences Seminar on his research to date.

Enhancing photosynthetic efficiency using non-transgenic methods is an attractive strategy towards greater food security. At LEC, thanks to a collaborative effort within an international project, we have explored the photosynthetic capacity of wheat-related species, elite wheat cultivars and novel lines obtained by hybridization of these two groups (introgression lines). Photosynthesisis a complex trait, and we have studied two specific aspects. On the one hand,we have studied Rubisco biochemistry. On the other hand, we have characterised whole plant photosynthesis, using a unique whole plant gas exchange systemdesigned at LEC. My results open up possibilities for improving photosynthesis by introgression of genes from wheat-related species to elite breeding lines and cultivars.
