Studies have shown that trees can promote infiltration of water into the soil. Streamside tree buffer zones and farm woodland can therefore be used to intercept surface runoff from agricultural land, which may carry pollutants such as sediment, nutrients and pesticides into watercourses. This PhD is investigating how trees affect infiltration, through their influence on soil properties and associated soil fauna, and how this varies between species.
