My core research focuses on understanding hydrological and biogeochemical processes that control the behaviour of macronutrients (principally phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon) within environmental systems. I combine field and laboratory approaches to examine these processes within rivers, wetlands, and the hyporheic zone interface between groundwater and surface water. Currently, I am working with novel stable oxygen isotope tracers to investigate biological and geochemical controls on phosphorus cycling within freshwater ecosystems. Further research interests include developing structural equation models to analyse interactions between geochemical, physical and biological processes within freshwater ecosystems, and collaboration with colleagues in the social and political sciences to develop and assess policy and practice related to natural resource management.
