Scholarships and Funding

You are welcome to propose your own research project for both PhD and Masters by Research study on a self-funded basis.

Throughout the academic year we advertise a number of funded studentships and you will find information on the current opportunities here. These are pre-determined courses of research across a huge range of possible subject areas, defined by individual supervisors and hosted at the Lancaster Environment Centre, Rothamsted Research or the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. You are welcome to apply for these opportunities as and when they are advertised.

Postgraduate Loan Scheme

The UK Government is introducing a postgraduate loans scheme for PhD students beginning in 2018.  Further details can be found here:

Help with self-funding

Alternatively you can seek to secure your own financial support from one of a number of possible funding bodies. Being self-funded in this way gives you the opportunity to approach us with your own research proposal. We can then help you to develop your ideas so that you extract full value from your time at the Graduate School – perhaps by bringing you together with the best possible supervisor, or by aligning your work with a particular research team.

If you would like to pursue the self-funding option, we can help you identify the best funding bodies to approach, and give you advice on how to make a successful application. In recent years, for example, we have helped prospective PhD students attract funding from bodies such as:

  • Science Without Borders
  • British Commonwealth Scholarship
  • China Scholarship Council
  • Petroleum Technology Development Fund

If you would like help with funding please email the Graduate School.
