What Will You Study

This course combines specialist modules in hydrology, water quality and ecology with a research project tailored towards developing skills directly relevant to a career in the water sector in the UK, mainland Europe or internationally.

You will be taught by world experts in the field, including staff from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (within the Lancaster Environment Centre) and industry leader JBA Consulting.

Your specialised project will benefit from our strong research links with organisations such as Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, United Utilities, JBA Consulting, the Environment Agency, Defra and the UK Government Research Councils. Some projects involve placements within these organisations.

As an MSc SWM student you become an associate member of the LEC Water and Soil Sciences Group and are invited to all of our research and social activities.

The course will provide essential theoretical and practical skills for those with a wide range of backgrounds who wish to pursue a career in the water sector in the UK, mainland Europe or internationally, or develop their research skills in water sciences. For those already employed in the water sector, you can gain the specialist skills by taking the course part-time over two years.

The course offers core modules but has the flexibility to allow you to specialise more in certain topics. For the MSc programme you select six modules (each worth 15 credits) plus a project focused on the water sector or natural water environment.

We recommend that you select at least four of the following of modules:

  • Catchment Protection (field course)
  • Environmental Management
  • Flood Forecasting and Flood Risk Management
  • Groundwater Resources and Protection
  • Lake Ecology
  • Modelling Environmental Processes

Including one of the modules taught by JBA Consulting:

  • Catchment Hydrology and Assessment
  • River Hydraulics: Processes, Structures and Modelling
  • Coastal Erosion and Flood Risk Management
  • Forecasting and Extreme Event Response
  • Integrated Systems for Sustainable Surface Water Management
  • Sustainable Floodplain Management and Restoration

You may select up to two additional modules pertinent to the Sustainable Water Management programme from a wide range available within the Lancaster Environment Centre and elsewhere (e.g., Management School, Engineering Department) at Lancaster University.
