What Will You Study
Combining the fundamental sciences with physical geography and geology, our Earth and Environmental Science degree focuses on Earth processes and emphasis is placed on fieldwork and hands-on learning. The degree gives you an unprecedented breadth of learning, covering areas as diverse as geological mapping, atmospheric processes and tectonics and sedimentation. You’ll examine the geological processes that underpin our planet before linking these to human impacts on the land, atmosphere and oceans.
In your first year, your modules will include The Earth’s Interior, Geology, and Natural Hazards alongside a broader range of options across the environmental sciences including Global Environmental Challenges and Atmosphere, Weather and Climate.
In your second year, you will focus on core skills through modules such as Geological Mapping, Geoscience in Practice and Soil Science, including significant elements of geological and Earth science fieldwork.
In the third year of your course, you will complete your dissertation with Employability Skills or a work placement and choose from diverse options, including Introduction to Geophysical Techniques; Environmental Magnetism; and a Volcanic Processes Field Course run on Mount Etna in Sicily.
During the final year of your course you will complete an extended dissertation project and a Physical Volcanology module. You will also choose modules from a wide range of masters-level options that include Environmental Aspects of Renewable Energy; Modelling Environmental Processes; and Chemical Risk Assessment. You will finish your degree with detailed masters-level knowledge of Earth science and the interface between the Earth’s interior and surface, giving an advantage over those taking shorter BSc programmes.

Lancaster University offers a range of programmes, some of which follow a structured study programme, and others which offer the chance for you to devise a more flexible programme. We divide academic study into two sections - Part 1 (Year 1) and Part 2 (Year 2, 3 and sometimes 4). For most programmes Part 1 requires you to study 120 credits spread over at least three modules which, depending upon your programme, will be drawn from one, two or three different academic subjects. A range of Advanced/Higher Level subjects, including two sciences from Biology, Environmental Science, Human Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Geography, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics or Psychology is required for entry.

The breadth of this degree, plus transferable skills in quantitative analysis, ensures that Lancaster’s Earth and Environmental scientists have a wide variety of career options.
Wherever an industry affects the environment, our graduates are valued. In the public sector, opportunities exist from research and regulatory bodies like the Environment Agency, through to the armed forces. Meanwhile, private sector industries, including civil engineering, environmental consultancy, mining and construction, demand the skills of Lancaster’s high-calibre graduates.
Many graduates take their learning to MSc or PhD level to enhance their specialist knowledge and skills. For example, many of our recent students have chosen to continue their studies at Lancaster through our MSc in Volcanology and Geological Hazards.
Teaching and Learning Methods
At Lancaster we offer a broad range of learning environments which include the traditional lecture-tutorial , interactive workshops, laboratory and practical activities, student-led seminars and web-based delivery.
The modules which make up a programme of study are assessed using a variety of different methods, enabling students to demonstrate their capabilities in a range of ways. Typical coursework assignments include laboratory reports, essays, literature reviews, short tests, poster sessions, group work assessment and oral presentations. Formal examinations include short answer questions, essays and data analysis. Students are supported in the production of final year project reports and dissertations. We offer you a variety of stimulating and effective approaches to teaching, learning and assessment. This enables you and your tutors to explore the very latest thinking within your subject and develops your skills in problem solving, analysis and critical reflection, communication, application of knowledge and modern technologies.
As a University, we commit to providing all our undergraduates with a minimum number of contact hours per week, providing you with timely feedback on your work and a maximum number of 15 students per seminar group.
Our annual tuition fee is set for a 12-month session, starting in the October of your year of study.

Tuition fees for programmes are set annually for all new and continuing students. If you are studying on a course of more than one year’s duration, the fees for subsequent years of your programme are likely to increase each year. Such increases are normally calculated based on increases in the costs incurred by the institution, or in relation to UK government regulations which set the maximum fee for certain categories of student.
For the majority of undergraduate students, the most recent annual increase was 2.8%. Any change in fee rates will be communicated to students and applicants prior to the start of the academic year in question, and normally at least eight months prior to enrolment. Lancaster University's priority is to support every student to make the most of their life and education and we have committed £3.7m in scholarships and bursaries. 400 students each year will be entitled to bursaries or scholarships to help them with the cost of fees and/or living expenses. Our financial support depends on your circumstances and how well you do in your A levels (or equivalent academic qualifications) before starting study with us.
Scholarships recognising academic talent:
- An Academic Scholarship of £2,000 for the first year of study to any student from the UK entering with A*, A*, A or equivalent academic qualifications
- An Access Scholarship of £1,000 per year for all UK students from households with an income of less than £42,600 who achieve grades of A*, A, A, or the equivalent academic qualifications. In addition, students from household incomes of less than £42,600 who achieve higher entry grades of A*, A*, A (or equivalent academic qualifications), will also be awarded our £2,000 Academic Scholarship in their first year of study.
- An Excellence Scholarship which forms part of the Unconditional Offer Scheme for full time UK applicants with outstanding academic profiles within a number of academic departments.
Bursaries for life, living and learning
- A Lancaster Bursary of £1,000 per annum for all students from England with a household income of more than £25,000 but less than £42,600
Any financial support that you receive from Lancaster University will be in addition to government support that might be available to you (eg fee loans) and will not affect your entitlement to these.

Students will be required to pay for travel to field sites and will have to purchase wet weather clothing, boots and waterproof notebooks for fieldtrips for which the estimated cost is approximately £110. The course offers optional field trips and students will have to pay for any travel and accommodation costs. If students undertake placements then they may incur additional travel costs. Students on certain modules may wish to purchase a hand lens and compass clinometer but these may be borrowed from the Department.
Students also need to consider further costs which may include books, stationery, printing, photocopying, binding and general subsistence on trips and visits. Following graduation it may be necessary to take out subscriptions to professional bodies and to buy business attire for job interviews.
