Why study Environmental or Earth Science?

As one of the first universities to establish a department of Environmental Science, we have long been in the forefront of the field. We are placed third nationally for Geography and Environmental Science by the Guardian 2014 league table.
How do I know if environmental science is for me?
Environmental Science is key to tackling the challenges facing the world today, using physical, chemical, biological and geographical principles to improve our understanding of the Earth and how humans impact upon it.
You may have studied a range of science courses at school or college and now want a broadly based science degree with direct relevance to the big issues of the day. If so, Environmental Science at Lancaster would be an excellent choice. If your environmental interests are more about Geology then why not consider our Earth and Environmental Science programme, which mixes geology with processes occurring at the Earth’s surface.
You might also consider Physical Geography or Ecology and Conservation. Joint programmes are also available in Environmental Mathematics and Environmental Chemistry.
Choice and flexibility
Studying at the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC), which brings together Geography, Environmental and Biological Sciences, you get the chance to try out different subjects, anything from sustainability to volcanoes. LEC runs over 100 optional modules, so you can discover what most interests you: it’s easy to move between courses if you find your passions lie elsewhere.
Everyone gets hands on experience
Field and laboratory work are central to our approach. For many students the field trips within the UK or Italy are the highlight of their study. These are an opportunity to experience firsthand what you are learning academically and to get to know staff and your fellow students better.
All our students undertake a dissertation project, under the guidance of an active researcher. These could be lab or field based and could be attached to ongoing projects in the UK, or even Borneo or the Himalayas.
Students on specific degree schemes study abroad for a year in North America or Australasia while others may choose to spend time in places such as the Netherlands or Iceland via the Erasmus scheme.
Good job prospects
Every student gets the opportunity to apply for a work placement or internship, sometimes paid. Unusually, we have our own Enterprise and Business Partnership team, matching students with relevant businesses and organisations. With more than 20 environmental businesses and key government researchers based on site, you get the chance to make connections for your future career. Perhaps that’s why nine out of ten of our students are working, or studying, six months after graduating.
