Library tips for the summer

Summer Vacation Opening Hours

If you are on campus over the summer, please check the Library vacation opening hours. The Learning Zone is open 24/7 via University Card swipe access.

Just graduated?

If you have graduated this summer you can become an Alumni member of the Library. All Alumni have access to selected electronic resources, and for an annual fee of £30 you can borrow from the Library too. See our Alumni page for more information. If you are re-registering for another degree here in October, you can join as an external borrower over the summer free of charge - please ask at the information point or contact us for more details.

Summer Vacation Borrowing and Recalls

Please return any books you no longer need before you leave Lancaster or go on holiday. Books are subject to recall over the summer, so please make sure you check your University emails regularly and are able to return any within 14 days.  If you are not going to be on campus, our Recalls page has details of how to return recalled books by post.

If you are a continuing student or a member of staff, you can borrow books over the summer for the usual loan periods. See our Borrowing page for details of how to renew your books via OneSearch. You will continue to receive your weekly account statement email so it's easy to stay up to date.

If you need a book while you are away from campus, please contact us to see if we can buy an e-book for you. We can also post books for a small charge.

Using Other Libraries

The SCONUL Vacation Access scheme allows undergraduate students to make use of other academic libraries over the summer break. Please note that this is usually for reference use only. Details of how to access other libraries can be found on the SCONUL Vacation Access site.

For postgraduate students and staff, the SCONUL Access scheme usually allows borrowing from participating institutions. See our Using Other Libraries page for more information about SCONUL Access.

You are recommended to check with the library you want to visit before travelling for details of opening hours, available services (including the availability of computers or Wi-Fi for visitors) and any other documentation you may need to provide for access.

Have a great summer! Please get in touch if you have any questions or need any help or advice.
