I've typed in my author - United Nations - but it's not displaying properly in my reference. What can I do?

When you have a corporate author - an organisation or company - you need to put a comma at the end of the name in the Author field when you are entering a reference manually.

In my Word document my citations have suddenly disappeared and have been replaced by lots of code with curly and angle brackets. What has gone wrong?

You are seeing the normally hidden field codes in Word, eg:

<EndNote><Cite><Author>Moir</Author><Year>2002</Year><RecNum>1676</RecNum><Display

To remove them, select Alt + F9.

I'm using the Harvard style, but I don't want the author names to be in capitals in the bibliography. Can I do anything about this?

You can customise the output style if you are using EndNote desktop ( this isn't possible in EndNote Online). Select Edit, Output styles, Edit "Harvard". Then click on Author Name under Bibliography and select Normal in the Capitalization drop down list. Do the same thing for Editor name. Then save the file, which will be named Harvard copy and saved to your H: drive if using a university pc. The new style will now be available to select in the normal way when choosing an output style.

In Online search I can't find the connection to Lancaster University. Where has it gone?

If you have loaded EndNote onto a non-managed machine, the connection file for the catalogue here will not be included. You can add the file to your EndNote program - see the Endnote files tab at the top of the page.

How do I add letters with accents?

The easiest way is to copy and paste from Word via the insert symbol function. You can also access the Character Map directly via: Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Character Map. Copy the desired symbol to the clipboard, then paste it into your reference.

The EndNote tab in Word has just disappeared. How can I get it back?

The link between EndNote and Word has become corrupted. To solve this you need to enable the relevant plugins again. Click on File and Options in Word. Next click on Add-Ins on the left. In the Manage: drop-down list at the bottom of the page, click on Disabled Items and then on Go. Select the EndNote plugins and click Enable.

Can I use EndNote over the VPN at home?

You can access EndNote desktop on your own machine either at home or on campus via Application Jukebox

My EndNote tab in Word says EndNote Web, not EndNote X7. Where has the correct tab gone?

You can restore the EndNote X7 tab: Click on the tab, then Preferences, then Application. From the drop down Application list, select EndNote and click OK. The EndNote X7 tab will be restored.

One of my citations is showing the author's initials as well as surname. How can I get rid of the initials?

Initials are used to distinguish between two authors with the same surname. You will also find initials appearing when the name of the same author is recorded slightly differently in separate references. Check all the instances of the same name in the references in your library and ensure that you use the same name format in all of them. Update the citations and the initials should then disappear.

I've heard I can export information about my research from an EndNote library to PURE. How do I do that?

In your EndNote library, click on File and Export. In the dialog box select text file in the Save as type drop down box. Click on the Output style drop down box, click on Select another style..., highlight Refman (RIS) Export and click Choose. Uncheck Export Selected References to export the whole library or select the required references in your library and leave this box checked. Click on Save. You can then import this file into Pure.

My numbered citations in the Vancouver style aren't in the right order. What is the problem?

You have probably inserted a citation into a text box.  Such citations are formatted first at the top of your reference list.  If you are using Word 2007 or earlier, you can just covert the text boxes to frames.  To do this right click on the text box and choose format - text box.  Select the text box tab and click the convert to frame button then click OK to confirm.  In Word 2010 you will need to insert a frame, paste in your contents and then enter your citation.  To insert a frame, right click on the ribbon.  Click on Customise quick access toolbar.  Add Insert horizontal frame.  You will then be able to insert a frame when needed.

I need the journal titles in my reference list to be in abbreviated format.  How do I do that?

You can only work automatically with journal title abbreviations in EndNote desktop, not in EndNote Online.  In the desktop application you need to import one of EndNote's abbreviation files.  To do this, click on Tools, Open term lists, Journals term lists.  Highlight any terms currently there and click Delete terms.  Now click on the Lists tab, and on Import list..., select the relevant list and click Open.  The abbreviations list will be loaded into your EndNote program.  Now if your style requires abbreviated journal titles, they will be supplied automatically.

I've created a bibliography using Microsoft word's reference tool.  How can I start using EndNote without losing my work?

You can transfer all the references you have created in Word to EndNote.  In the EndNote tab click on Export to EndNote, Export word Master List.  All the references will be transferred to your EndNote library.

Can I use EndNote with OpenOffice?

You can use EndNote desktop's Cite While You Write tool with OpenOffice Writer 3.x.  The tool is installed automatically, but if you install EndNote after Open Office you will need to activate CWYW:  close OpenOffice then in Control Panel select uninstall or change a program, find EndNote, click Repair and restart OpenOffice.

EndNote online does not have a CWYW plugin, but you can insert your citations manually and then create an independent reference list using the Format - Bibliography options.  You can also format your citations and bibliography using EndNote online:  type your citations in the format {Smith, 2009} and save your file as Rich Text Format (.RTF).  In EndNote online select Format then Format paper.  Browse for your saved file, select your output style (eg Harvard Lancaster) and click Format.  You can then view or save your document.

I'm using EndNote Online on a lab/library pc but I can't see the EndNote tab in Word.  How can I download it?

To see the tab, you need to launch EndNote desktop via Application Jukebox (make sure Word is closed before you do this). When you have launched the program, minimise the window and open Word where you will see a tab which says EndNote X7.  Click on the tab, then Preferences and Application.  From the drop down Application list select EndNote online and click OK.  At the next box log in to your EndNote online account. The tab will then enable you to access your EndNote online account and insert citations.
