Why did you choose LICA?

I chose Lancaster University and LICA for the following reasons:

  • Lancaster is a top class university, LICA is an active department, and Theatre is a strong section.
  • My supervisors have notable reputations and complimentary research interests to mine, in addition to which one of my supervisors is a practitioner which I felt was an advantage because I am doing a Practice as Research PhD.
  • The university is located in the geographical region in which I make rural landscape walking performance.
  • I was awarded an AHRC studentship to study in Theatre, LICA.

What was the best part of your course?

I’m doing a PhD in performance which is the field I work in as a professional artist so doing a Practice as Research PhD is enabling me to study in great detail an art form that I believe in. This is invigorating and a great privilege.

How did your degree help with the work you do now?

It is giving me new perspectives on my practice, which is developing in ways that it would not have done otherwise.

What’s ‘Lancaster Life’ like?

The university is an invigorating place to study with a creative atmosphere on campus and Lancaster is a friendly city to live in with close access to The Lakeland Fells and the Yorkshire Dales and fast trains to London when needed.

Any advice for the next generation of LICA students?

It takes awhile to find your bearings as a PhD student but just keep going and pace yourself – it is a long process. Enjoy it.
