Why did you choose LICA?

I wanted to attend a University that had a film degree that was not practical or vocational, but instead treated films as texts to be academically studied and discussed. The LICA building is a fantastic, state-of-the-art hub for the contemporary arts, and the lecturers are frequently published in academic journals, contributing to the academic literature on film as opposed to merely teaching it.

What was the best part of your course?

The chance to select a wide range of various modules, from Silent Cinema to the Comic Book Film allows you the freedom to study a number of topics from various parts of film history. The seminars on these topics, where lectures are expanded upon through student discussions, are also an integral part of what makes the course so enjoyable as well as challenging.

How did your degree help with the work you do now?

The degree’s focus on class discussion and debate, as well as its more theoretical approach to film studies provides students with a number of transferable skills. The discussions help build confidence in public speaking, as well as offering an appreciation into other views and opinions on a wide range of subjects. And being able to consistently hit targets and deadlines for essays and other pieces of work offers an attractive skill to potential employers after University.

What’s ‘Lancaster Life’ like?

Lancaster University’s on-campus accommodation offers all the conveniences of a small town (newsagents, bookshops, even a Greggs!) with modern, state-of-the-art facilities such as the Library, Learning Zone and on-campus cinema. The sheer amount of students living in Lancaster both on campus and in the city itself offers a lively atmosphere which is also found in the student union nightclub in the centre of the town.

Any advice for the next generation of LICA students?

Studying Film at Lancaster allowed me to pursue my passion at a prestigious university, where I was taught by experts in their chosen fields. The facilities are fantastic, and the opportunities afterwards, be it postgraduate study or employment, are numerous. Come to Lancaster!
