This SLLAT talk will be delivered by Jose Luis Moreno Vega, on 'Implicit and Explicit learning of Prepositions in English'.

Abstract

This study consists of a quantitative SLA experiment assessing the effectiveness of three computer delivered treatments: implicit instruction (input enhancement combined with output enhancement) and two explicit treatments (explicit instruction and processing instruction). The study tested namely whether two rules that govern the use of three target prepositions can be learned implicitly or whether an explicit intervention is necessary. The aim was also to test which type of instruction (implicit or explicit) was more prone to result in either explicit knowledge or implicit knowledge. In addition, the study also focused on how amenable each target rule was to both implicit and explicit instruction.
