Careers in finance
Many of our students aspire to work in the finance sector, in areas such as retail or investment banking, fund management or financial analysis. There is an enormous variety of careers in this area – but as the rewards are high, the competition for graduate jobs is fierce.
Financial careers coaching
That is why we have teamed up with a financial markets specialist who has worked for several leading investment banks and financial technology institutions, allowing us to offer specialist careers support to talented students who wish to target these jobs.
His role is to give you insights into the many different career opportunities that exist within the sector, some of which are not well understood. He’ll give a clear picture of the skills required for different types of roles – and, crucially, an insider view on what employers will be looking for.
For those who are targeting City employers, he offers tailored one-to-one guidance on applications, interview practice sessions and preparation for assessment centres. This support is very successful in enabling LUMS students to secure internships, placements and graduate jobs, despite tough competition.
Professional skills and qualifications
Depending on your choice of options, as an Accounting and Finance major you have the chance to learn how to use some of the key data platforms used by financial analysts – again, giving you skills that will be very valuable to prospective employers. For example, our financial markets lab contains a suite of Bloomberg Professional terminals, giving you access to real-time data from stock markets around the world.
To help those with ambitions to become a financial or investment analyst, we have a module in financial analysis which is closely linked to the Level I syllabus of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) examinations. Through our partnership with Fitch Learning we are also able to provide specialist preparation for CFA Level I exams, giving you a headstart in acquiring this much sought-after and globally recognised professional qualification while you are still at Lancaster.
