Special courses and programmes

‌These are examples of the Centre's experience of running courses for managers in China.

Strengthening Chinese links with the aeronautical industry:

  • A special short course directed by Professor David Brown for 23 senior aviation managers in the aeronautical industry, ran for two weeks in the Graduate Management School in Lancaster, in summer 1995. This was undertaken in collaboration with the China British Institute in Beijing as their first sponsored programme
  • Professor David Brown’s pioneering work, collaboratively with Renmin University, in delivering an advanced management programme for British Aerospace very senior managers
  • Through its Strategic Leaders Unit, the Management School has been collaborating since 1997 with BAe Systems on its innovative Strategic Leaders Programme. A key part of this world class management programme includes a module based in China. The title of this module is ’The Collaborative Mindset - Leading Global Growth’. The final module director was Professor David Brown.

To develop this programme Lancaster has been pleased to work with two prestigious Chinese partners: The Renmin University of China, under President Yuan Wei, and The Guanghua School of Management at Peking University with Dean Professor Zheng Weiying. The programme draws on the senior faculty, complemented by key industry leaders and government officials.

Networking event

The LCMC has collaborated with the MBA Careers Unit to organise for on-campus Chinese students an employer networking event.

The first such event was held in June 2002, and seminars on China and its economy, and 'doing business with China' have been arranged annually since then.

Short course for finance officials

Through the LCMC a seven-day course for China's Ministry of Finance was delivered during September 2004. Course participants were 20 senior officials from central, regional and city administrations throughout China.

Participants were eager to learn about principles for evaluating the efficiency of government expenditure and the practices followed in the UK. Co-ordinator Dongsong Zhang of London Business Exchange arranged the full UK schedule which included visits to the Treasury in London, Cambridge and Imperial College, London.

While based in Lancaster, in addtion to sessions on public sector finance, they had the opportunity to quiz financial officers at the Preston headquarters of Lancashire County Council, at the North West Development Agency's offices in Warrington, and at Lancaster's Town Hall.

Course for government officials from Pudong, Shanghai

In October 2005, the LCMC arranged a one-day course on performance appraisal for 22 senior officials from the Pudong District on behalf of Sunland International. Amongst the speakers were Leadership expert Professor Keith Grint and also Professor Mike Pidd (Management Science) who is researching public sector efficiency issues in the UK.

Outside speakers, who provided an operational input, included a representative from the Personnel Section of Lancaster City Council.

Senior University Officials and Professors

In October 2004 and in January 2006, the LCMC arranged short updating sessions for senior University officials and Professors on issues such as Unversity and Faculty strategy and postgraduate education. The latter course was run specifically for representatives of institutions in Jiangsu Province and the visit was facilitated by SUMan based in Manchester.

Officials from Guizhou and Jiangsu Provinces

In July 2006, the LCMC arranged another one-day course on performance appraisal, this time for 17 senior officials from Guizhou and Jiangsu Provinces in collaboration again with Sunland International. Amongst the speakers were management accountant expert Professor David Otley (Accounting and Finance), and Martin Dowling, HR specialist from the University of St Andrews.

Speakers with professional and operational expertise, included a representative from the Personnel Section of Lancaster City Council (who gave his presentation in the Lancaster Town Hall) and from Dundee City Council who introduced interesting ideas about new systems for group appraisal.

Managers from CSR Locomotives, Sichuan Province

Also in July 2006, the LCMC arranged a major one-week course on management development for senior managers from CSR locomotives, commissioned through Hong Yuan International. 23 managers attended the programme which included sessions on strategy (delivered by Professor David Brown, LCMC Director); operations and project management and on organisational development (delivered by Professor Mark Easterby-Smith, drawing on his experience of organisational learning models in China).

Highlights of the programme included an insight into the UK rail industry from Professor Roger Kemp, head of the University's Engineering Department, and a visit to Alstom in Manchester. Professor Kemp's previous work experience in Alstom and in China made him uniquely placed to prepare the managers for their company visit.

Visits to the National Railway Museum in York, to Liverpool and Chester as well as to the Lake District were incorporated into the programme, making it a lively and worthwhile experience.

Chinese government officials from CYCIE

In November 2007 the LCMC ran a successful 10-day intensive course for senior government officials, organised with the China Youth Centre for International Exchange (CYCIE). The course in management and youth issues was provided for 18 officials, including delegation leader Mr Zhang Xiaobing (from the Inner Mongolia Region) and organiser Lei Peng (Peter), all of whom make a contribution to youth policy and provision back in China.

The course provided the officials with insights into British human resource theory and practice, into organisational learning and into strategy. Several of the delegates had a finance function in their home organisations, and hence particularly appreciated the sessions on public sector finance and on resource allocation issues and performance indicators.
