Abstract: Operational Research (OR) originally arose in the context of military operations at the start of World War II. Nearly thirty years later, in 1967, Stafford Beer defined Management Science (MS) as "the use of OR in business". Both OR and MS regularly draw on other fields, especially Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. In recent years, however, two additional closely-related fields have emerged: Data Science and Business Analytics. There is some uncertainty, even among experts (!), as to how exactly these different fields could and/or should relate to each other. This seminar will consist of three short presentations (from Prof. Nigel Davis, Prof. Robert Fildes and Dr Chris Nemeth), followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session.
