The Department has an active doctoral programme allowing students the opportunity to undertake research in Management Science. We welcome applications from suitably qualified students wishing to study for a research degree. Details of current major research areas are given in the Research section. Students may also carry out interdisciplinary research jointly in Management Science and another department in the Management School or University.
All research students are admitted onto the doctoral programme, where it is normally expected that their study will lead to the production of a thesis to be submitted for the award of a PhD degree. This requires three years full-time study or four-five years on a part-time basis. Students may study for an MPhil only, and the demands made regarding the contribution of the thesis are correspondingly reduced. The MPhil normally takes two years of full-time study or three-four years part-time, for suitably qualified applicants. The Integrated PhD is for those entrants who need further training in research and Management Science, who have to follow the MRes in Management Science Management Science MRes in their first year.
The PhD and MPhil degrees are awarded on the basis of a thesis and oral examination. A PhD requires that the student demonstrates a knowledge of the subject and the capacity to pursue research that makes an original contribution to knowledge. The chapters of the thesis must be written to a standard compatible with publication in refereed journals. For the MPhil, the student is expected to demonstrate a grasp of the appropriate research methods and the ability to apply them in an independent critical manner.
