The analysis of tactical decisions within sports
The analysis of tactical decisions within sports is a topic which has to date received very little attention in academia, but it is potentially a very rich area.
More and more statistics are being collected concerning every minute detail of the progress of sports such as football, cricket and others, and with modern computing power there is the potential for much fascinating research.
Mike Wright has carried out analyses in the past of tactics within football, cricket, baseball and squash. Topics studied include the best strategy and timing for substitutions and the value of "professional" fouls. He is keen to carry out further work either for these sports or for others, and thus would welcome applications from potential PhD students.
The research requires a great deal of computational work, using techniques such as dynamic programming, and thus strong programming ability, in a powerful high-level language such as C++, is essential.
