Canary Wharf event boosts financial sector networking

Networking Event

Lancaster University students and alumni engaged in an evening of lively discussion and networking at the Thomson Reuters building in London's Canary Wharf, on 27th June.

The student attendees, many of whom had spent the afternoon on a company visit to Deutsche Bank, appreciated the opportunity to develop their networking skills and to get first-hand insights and tips from experienced alumni working in the financial sector.

Teresa Villamin, BSc Management and Information Technology student, shared how she had benefited from the event: “Having networked with a lot of alumni, I have had an eye opening experience here. I have been given the insights I need and want, to see how it is to work within the financial industry.”

Time dedicated to specialist areas of interest - Investment Banking, Investment Management, Consulting and FinTech - allowed for focused discussion during one part of the evening, followed by open networking which enabled attendees to benefit from an even wider range of perspectives.

This event is part of a regular schedule of face-to-face and online opportunities designed to facilitate mutually beneficial interaction between students and alumni, supporting professional development and career journeys.

Matthew Howard, LUMS Careers Adviser and member of the joint Careers and Alumni team who ran the event, remarked: “As The Times University of the Year 2018, with a record number of students securing 2018/19 'City' financial positions, the event was a perfect beacon of Lancaster’s student and alumni career success. Thank you to all of the professionals who attended from across the Investment Banking, Investment Management, Consulting and FinTech sectors.”

Now in its third year, the #LFN2018 event welcomed nearly 80 attendees (dedicated enough to forsake the glorious sunshine and World Cup football elsewhere!). Alumni attendees were from a number of Lancaster degree programmes and represented a broad range of career journeys across the sector, including roles at major financial companies such as JPMorgan, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays and HSBC.

LUMS alumni and current students are invited to join and make the most of our exclusive online networking platform, LUMS Connect, for more valuable insights and networking opportunities.
