Many business schools offer an Information Systems (IS) masters degree. So what’s different about the MSc in Information Technology, Management and Organisational Change (ITMOC) programme?
Typically IS or IT programmes have differentiated themselves from other business degrees by their high level of technical content – and so have appealed mainly to students interested in more technical careers as software designers or programmers.
Such programmes often focus primarily on technical approaches to programming, systems analysis and design, telecommunications and database analysis and design. These technical skills are then augmented by management-oriented modules. Yet, paradoxically, students often leave with insufficient technical skills to enter the more specialist careers and, having covered only limited management content, they are not adequately equipped to begin a management career either.

Integrated approach to IT
What’s special about the ITMOC MSc is that it is based on the recognition that information technology has become a strategic and organisational change issue, rather than one which is only – or even primarily – technical. Taught by 25 faculty members from across Lancaster University Management School, ITMOC provides research-led and student-centred teaching from the UK's top-ranked business school for Research Power (REF2014).
ITMOC therefore gives you a firm grasp of the key concepts, debates and issues in the areas of change management, IT management and strategy, knowledge management, and systems analysis and design – and combines this with an exploration of the technologies and organisational designs that underpin new and future organisational practices. Such knowledge can then be applied to many different types of organisation.
Through its interactive style of learning and challenging tasks such as company research projects, ITMOC also sets you up for the future by helping you develop important process skills that employers will value. These include problem structuring, project management, group working, presentation skills and report writing.
Each academic year more than 25 industry and business speakers from consultancies and tech companies provide a unique series of workshops, forums and seminars for ITMOC students – contributing to your professional development through the sharing of experience from established practitioners in the global IT sector. Speakers have included the UK's former government CIO, the CTO from IBM UK, a SAP consultant from HP, and Microsoft's CTO in West Africa. Alumni return each year to share their career experience since graduation.
