IT Support Analyst, Leeds Trinity University

Before finishing my BA degree in Information Science and Librarianship at Wuhan University, China in the summer of 2011, I decided to study a Masters degree in business management to better equip myself for my future career. I chose the UK for my postgraduate studies as it only takes one year to complete a high standard degree and I was attracted by the unique British culture as well.

I was offered a place from several universities, and after some research I decided to choose LUMS because it is one of the best business schools worldwide with a high rank and reputation. As an international student, I had to pass the English exam for the enrolment. LUMS not only accepts IELTS (organised by British Council) but also TOEFL, which is organised by ETS in the US and is the test I took.

The Management MSc course at LUMS provides a wide range of subjects in every aspect of business management and different pathways in marketing, strategic management and project management. The MSc Management modules provide a good combination of practical case studies, group discussions and academic theories analysis and essays. For instance, the Strategic Management module taught by Dr Winston Kwon is a good example of a perfect balance between strategy theories and real business case studies.

LUMS also provides strong academic support in terms of related courses. We had Maths sessions in the first term to prepare us for the modules in Finance and Accounting. IT training and academic writing sessions are also available for students to attend. And for students whose first language is not English, our programme opened a particular course in the Lent term run by the programme manager to provide English training. Furthermore, business foreign languages courses are also provided by LUMS, and I did French for two terms which I personally found really interesting and useful. I got a certificate issued by Lancaster University at the end of the study for my business French course.

Studying in Vienna

The study abroad schemes offered by LUMS are very attractive and worthwhile. I spent three weeks in Vienna in the summer of 2012 and it’s one of the best times I’ve ever had in my life. I could choose modules according to my preferences and the focus of the courses were really up-to-date and practical. We got the chance to visit some top European companies as well, including Siemens Austrian headquarters. The results I got in Vienna WU summer school counted for 50% of my dissertation final result, which helped me to get a distinction.

The career service at LUMS is also worth mentioning. Ajaz Hussain, Postgraduate Careers Advisor, arranged several meetings with me to discuss my CV while providing valuable career suggestions. This helped me to better understand my capacity and position in the job market and to be employed by Leeds Trinity University very soon after finishing my dissertation.

I am now have two roles at Leeds Trinity University as IT support analyst and information assistant, and it is the degree study at LUMS that has made me confident and professional enough to take on different challenges at work.
