Why choose the MSc International Business?
If you relished your study of business at undergraduate level, this MSc programme offers a demanding programme of advanced-level study which will enrich your thinking and develop your analytical skills to new levels.
The programme has a core focus on the international business environment and on examining how theory and practice can be applied to current and emerging issues in the global business environment. The Lancaster International Business programme differs from many other similar Masters programmes in that it is only open to students with a first degree in a business-related subject.
Focus on contemporary international business issues
You will be examining contemporary issues and developments in many different areas of international business – including international trade, foreign investment, the activities of multi-national enterprises, financial markets and cross-border flows of labour and technology and know-how.
A feature of the programme is its recognition of the influence of political, historical and cultural factors on international business issues. These ideas are not looked in the abstract: in some of the teaching sessions you will be interacting directly with practitioners.
Practical skills for employment
You will not only gain new perspectives and ways of addressing internatinal problems, you will also develop other important skills which will enhance your value to employers – for example, presentation, report-writing and IT skills, negotiation, team-work and leadership, skills in research design and analysis, and the ability to plan and manage a demanding schedule of work.
As our alumni profiles will show, these types of skills are ideal for roles within international businesses, as well as public sector and government agencies, marketing research companies, corporate research, banking and financial services, and consultancy firms.
International business in an international environment
The international element of the programme is not confined to curriculum content. You will learn a huge amount from your classmates, as you will be studying alongside people from many different countries, both on the programme itself and within LUMS more broadly. There will be ample opportunity to explore and debate variations in practice around the world. You will also be working in cross-cultural teams, mirroring the environment in internationally-orientated companies.
The teaching team is also diverse: you will be taught by staff with expertise on international business issues in India, China, East Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa and the UK. The staff involved are highly research-active and have substantial international experience.
Recognised pathway to PhD study
There is a strong research ethos within LUMS, and a considerable number of MSc graduates go on to PhD study. If you are interested in this option, the MRes version of the programme covers additional material related to advanced research, and is ideal preparation for PhD study.
