PhD Management Science (Integrated)
From Great Britain
Why did you choose to study at LUMS?
I graduated from LUMS in 2007 with a First Class degree in Operations Management. My strong educational background certainly helped to accelerate my career, resulting in early promotion and responsibility. I have seven years' experience, including a year spent at L’Oréalduring my degree course. Most recently I have been based in Istanbul overseeing textile productionat global sourcing company Li and Fung based in Istanbul, Turkey in the position of Senior Merchandise Manager. I have returned to full-time education to fulfil my ambition of doctoral research. I thoroughlyenjoyed my undergraduate education and I have an immense sense of pride in being a returning student at such a world-renowned establishment.
Why did you choose your particular programme?
I am doing an Integrated PhD in Management Science which is a four-year course and involved doing an MRes in the first year. Having worked in industry, I found the MRes a very good transition back into education. I took a selection of Management Science Masters modules that were most relevant to my future research and this enabled me to refresh myself with the relevant theory to support my PhD. Additionally, I took some research training modules with the first yearPhD students. Mixing with both the Masters and PhD students meant I had a really good support network. I successfully completed the MRes in Management Science with Distinction in my first year and this has certainly provided strong foundations for my PhD research.
What are you enjoying most about your programme?
I enjoy the programme as it provides a supportive environment to study. We have the opportunity to research independently and manage our own time whilst interacting with other faculty and industry. The Management School has a friendly atmosphere and provides students with the perfect learning environment and the opportunity tobuild good working relationships and friendships with colleagues from very different cultural backgrounds.
Tell us about your best Lancaster moment so far.
LUMS encourages PhD students to go to international academic conferences to present their research to others within the field. I love travelling so I am pleased that we have the chance to do this! Last year in the first year of my PhD, I presented at the EurOMA Sustainability Forum in Barcelona, Spain and the EurOMA conference in Neuchatel, Switzerland. This was a great experience and it was an opportunity todevelopresearch contacts with both fellow doctoral students as well as senior academics within the field.I also received invaluable feedback.
What are your plans after graduating from LUMS?
A PhD in Management Sciencefrom LUMS offers many job opportunities, both within university education and research and within industry. I currently teach undergraduate seminars for courses within the Management Science department. I enjoy this and I am considering a role which will allow me to continue to educate others in subject areas I am passionate about. My academic background combined with my previous work experiencealso means that I have the option to return to industry.
