Management and Consulting: Practice and Critique

The module aims to provide understanding about contemporary management practice through the window of consultancy, and is therefore directly relevant as preparation for the work placement and/or years abroad.

You will examine the analytical skills needed and used by consultants and how consultancy intervantions take place.

This is tackled both theoretically through the lectures and course content, and through a series of practical activities, conducted mainly in groups, which culminate in a major client project in the Lent term. The project, which is a form of consultancy, provides a unifying perspective and overall target for the course.

The module looks at who consultants are and the major themes in consultancy practice today and critiques the industry and process which aims to lead to improvements in management practice.
