In October 2017, Professor Garth Dales will visit the Mathematical Institute at Leiden University, Holland, as the Kloosterman Chair.

In 1986 the Mathematical Institute at Leiden established an annual visiting professorship in mathematics, called the ‘Kloosterman Chair’, after Professor dr. Hendrik Douwe Kloosterman.  Since then, the Chair has been held by a number of prominent mathematicians.

During Professor Dales' visit, he will give a public lecture discussing the automatic continuity of homomorphisms from algebras of continuous functions to other algebras. This turns out to be strongly related to fundamental issues in set theory.
