When Sarah Quinby graduated from Lancaster University this week, she became the fifth member of her family to do so in the last 10 years.

The 20-year-old graduated with a first-class degree in Law, following in the footsteps of her cousins and continuing the family tradition.

Sarah said: “Out of my grandparents’ five grandchildren, the four that have gone to university all came to Lancaster.

“My cousin, Beth, who graduated last year, and I, came to look around and we didn’t really want to like it!

“We had been to the same primary school, high school and college and we wanted to find our own paths.

“But, when we came, we fell in love with the place and we have fond memories of visiting our older cousins.

“My cousin, Kate, who graduated in 2009, met her partner here and they got married a few years ago, and Beth also met her partner here.”

Of the five family members to have graduated from Lancaster, including one of Sarah’s second cousins, three have studied Law, one studied Politics and another studied at the Management School.

Sarah, who is from Crewe, said: “Lancaster has provided us all with unforgettable memories and amazing experiences.

“For me particularly, I enjoyed so much, from events such as Extrav to taking part in the Law Society Netball Team.

“The close-knit community of the colleges has created friendships for life and it will definitely be hard to say goodbye.”

She added: “None of our parents have been to university, our generation is the first to get a degree. I think it is the campus and the community feel that we all liked.

“I’ve got a niece who is 16 and thinking about university, but it is goodbye to Lancaster for a while.”
