GrapheneNOWNANO is a joint Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) run by the Universities of Lancaster and Manchester. It builds on the two partners’ world-leading expertise in the science and technology of graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials and offers a broad interdisciplinary training programme in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The CDT builds upon and is run jointly with our NOWNANO programme established since 2009.
Key points of the PhD programme
Research in the science of graphene & 2D materials and their wide-ranging applications leading to PhD in Nanoscience.
Theoretical and computational research projects offered by the Centre of Nanoscale Dynamics at Lancaster include:
- Theory of physical properties of new atomic two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures;
- Studies of effects of strong correlations and frontiers of quantum physics and 2D materials;
- Modelling nanodevices based on 2D materials and design of materials on demand;
- Theoretical electrochemistry of graphene in liquid and polymer environment;
- Quantum chemistry simulations of functionalisation of graphene.
Experimental and technology projects suprvised by the Quantum Technology Centre at Lancaster include:
- Studies of electronic transport in heterostructures of graphene with hexagonal boron nitride;
- Growth of III-V semiconductors - graphene heterosystems for applications in optoelectronics;
- Development of nanoscale devices using graphene and hexagonal chalcogenides in conjuction with superconductors and ferromagnetic metals for applications in quantum technologies;
- Development and studies of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) using graphene and 2D materials.
The PhD course starts with a 6-month taught programme in nanoscience and fundamentals of 2D materials, including core research techniques and mini-projects in a choice of labs.
Studentships and how to apply
13 fully-funded PhD studenships are available for graduates with a good degree (first or high upper second) in physics, chemistry, engineering, or bio-medical disciplines. Funded places are available to UK and EU nationals resident in the UK for 3 years. A small number of funded places are also available to EU nationals not currently resident in the UK.
