Academic Head of Department Development Programme

The Head of Department (HoD) development programme aims to equip new HoDs, through a tailored programme of blended development interventions, with the knowledge, underpinning understanding and associated skills and behaviours aligned to the role.

The programme is appropriate for newly appointed HoDs, deputy HoDs and academics who may be considering applying for the role within the next year.

HoD Induction: 5th and 6th June 2018

The two day induction is supported by e-learning modules that you can access via the HoD Moodle site.

Please complete the modules indicated in the HoD Induction section of the Moodle site prior to the induction event.

The two day induction event aims to clarify the role and expectations of the academic leader, within the context of the 2020 strategy and to prepare new HoDs for the different leadership and management aspects of the role. The events facilitates networking, sharing practice and action planning with colleagues from different areas and provides the opportunity to hear from senior academic leaders and current HoDs about their personal approaches, challenges and lessons learned in respect of the role.

    E-learning

    A suite of E-Learning Modules are available via the HoD Moodle site.

    The E-learning modules have been specifically designed for the HE sector and the academic leadership and management role.

    Different modules have been aligned to the Induction event and to specific workshops. Please complete these modules prior to the workshops. The remaining modules can be completed on a standalone basis. 

  • Coaching/Mentoring

    Coaching/Mentoring

    Coaching

    One to one coaching is available for all new HoDs to support your induction into the role. Coaching sessions can be accessed throughout your first year at a relevant time to support any aspect of the leadership and management role. Information about Coaching can be accessed via the HoD Moodle site.

    Mentoring

    Mentoring can support your learning and development throughout your career, particularly when you take on increased responsibilities such as the HoD role. A mentor can help you to think through strategic decisions and reflect on issues that you encounter. Its benefits include improving your understanding of the working environment, skills development, increased motivation and boosting confidence.

    Mentoring for HoDs is facilitated through the University’s Mentor Match Scheme, whereby you will have the opportunity to be match with a more experienced or previous HoD.
