The programme runs from January to July and consists of two elements:
Element 1: Coaching
The programme starts with an interactive and experiential one day workshop followed by group coaching. The workshop focuses on core foundations around your research, including prioritising from your values, managing the inner critic, sustaining the right balance, keeping focus and working with confidence. The coaching will respond to the goals you define in your role as research leader, for example around impact, dissemination and collaboration. The coaching provides a structure of challenge and accountability to achieve those goals and learn through the process.
Element 2: Research Leadership Development events
A suite of Research Leadership Development events run throughout the programme, covering a range of topics, all of which are related to Vitae’s Research Development Framework and designed to enhance your effectiveness as a research leader.
The programme is aimed at current and aspirational research leaders who want to develop and enhance their leadership and management practices and behaviours. You might be a newly appointed PI wishing to understand your main responsibilities and needing support in managing your first research team, or more experienced, with established research groups, wishing to develop and maintain a more strategic focus.
You may be interested if you want to:
• Develop your research management and leadership skills, to be effective as a research leader.
• Enable your staff and colleagues to develop their potential.
• Develop your awareness of the 'big picture' and position yourself and your research strategically.
For all involved, the Programme is an opportunity to expand internal networks, create effective strategies to enhance performance while managing the other demands of your role.
The following development events are specifically designed to support you in your role as a current or aspirational research leader and can be accessed on a stand-alone basis. To reserve your place on the sessions relevant to you, please contact the OED team direct.

The coaching programme is designed and delivered by Dr Will Medd. Leaving his Lectureship in 2013 to pursue his professional coaching business, Will was an established researcher and PI, with an international track record of publications and high impact research council projects. Will is passionate about ensuring participants gain personal value from the experience of the programme in ways that lead to taking actions that will make a difference.
A range of internal and external colleagues are involved in contributing to the programme. Key external contacts include Professor Judith Williams Dr Rachel Cowen and, both experienced researcher developers sourced via Vitae.
