Spring 1995

TLTP

In 1993, a consortium of Music Departments was awarded a grant under the UK Funding Councils' Teaching and Learning Technology Programme to develop computer-based learning materials for use by undergraduate music students. The TLTP Music Consortium is co-ordinated from Lancaster University, where CTI Music is based, and the two programmes have benefited from a close association. Around 20 music lecturers in institutions throughout the UK have worked with four software developers who were based at Belfast, Lancaster, Leeds and Southampton.

The nine modules listed in our first newsletter are well under way. Many are now nearing completion and will be available at the start of the next academic year. In addition to these, a tool has also been developed to allow music lecturers to write their own analytical or critical text and synchronise it with a commercial CD performance of the work under study. This can be used as a stand-alone facility or it can be used to produce CD-tours for incorporation into any of the Musicological modules.

All of the ten modules have the same basic hardware requirements: Macintosh LC475, 4 Mb with 640 x 480 colour screen or PC 486, 8 Mb, Windows 3.x or higher with 14" colour screen (SVGA) and headphones or loudspeakers. All are available to institutions of Higher Education funded by the U.K. Funding Councils. A nominal charge will be made to cover production costs, distribution materials, postage and packing.

The modules are listed below, with details of their expected use.
