The Hertfordshire Integrated Learning Project (HILP)

University of Hertfordshire

Marianne Hall

The Music Department at the University of Hertfordshire is part of a consortium of eleven subjects participating in The Hertfordshire Integrated Learning Project (HILP). The project's overall aim is to enhance student and staff perceptions of the value of integrating skills development and professional practice with discipline-specific learning.

Principal goals of the project

The project has three overlapping phases:

Development

Implementation and Testing

Evaluation and Dissemination

A trans-disciplinary case study, suitable for a number of different subjects, is currently being developed as a vehicle for integrating appropriate skills development with academic content. The case study is based on a site located within the Norfolk Broads and first year music students will be presented with a problem-based learning exercise within the 'Introduction to Sonic Art' module. Students will be required to compose a piece of music using a variety of wetland bird sounds that they will record at the site. As well as focusing on creativity and introducing students to technical skills such as audio recording and sampling, the development of a range of other 'Graduate' skills such as problem solving, time management, negotiation, presentation, and information gathering will be encouraged.

The project team has compiled a menu of skills, ranging from the discipline-specific to the more general, grouped in five broad categories from which staff and students can 'pick and mix' skills to be developed and supported within particular modules.
