In this interactive session, Tony Henshaw, a Senior Executive at Aditya Birla Group, will share his insights on building sustainable businesses, the risks and opportunities companies face, a new view of what sustainability means for business leaders, and share a three-step business model.
The Aditya Birla Group (www.adityabirla.com) is an Indian company that leads the way on sustainable business models. A global conglomerate with revenues of $42 billion and 120,000 employees in 34 countries, it produces (amongst other items) aluminium, copper, cement, fertiliser and textiles.
When Tony joined the group in 2013, he helped formalise and integrate the principles and standards required to develop and enhance their sustainable businesses. His team of experts have developed the ABG Sustainability Framework of Policies, Technical and Management Standards plus Guidance notes and Training Courses aligned to the International Standards of IFC, OECD, UNGC, ISO, OHSAS and GRI to support the development of good governance structures and practical roadmaps to help the Group’s businesses survive and thrive in our changing world and in doing so achieve the Aditya Birla 2017 Sustainability Vision.
This session will provide the opportunity for you to question and challenge the Aditya Birla Group in this area. Tony is very keen to hear your views. It is open to all students and staff, and will be of interest and relevance to those in the natural and social sciences, and management disciplines.

Tony is a UK Chartered Electrical Engineer and spent his early working life building and commissioning subway trains in South Korea, Portugal and for the London Underground. He received my MBA from the Manchester Business School in 1988, graduating with a Distinction. He has worked globally in manufacturing, corporate planning and health, safety, environment and social affairs. He has been at Aditya Birla since 2013, and is also a Board Member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, sits on the WBCSD India Advisory Panel and the GRI India Advisory Board.
