Former Electronics Technician Apprentice, and now a full-time member of the Physics Department, Ashley Wilson, has won an award for outstanding achievement in his Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Ashley was taken on by the Department in Sept 2016 as a full-time Electronics Technician but was recently presented with the HNC Electrical award in recognition of his achievement during his time as an apprentice by Training 2000.

Ashley joined the University as an Apprentice Electronics Technician in Sept 2012 and spent his first-year full time at Training 2000 in Blackburn. The next three years he had on the job training in the Physics Department where he gained experience in electrical/electronic fault finding, design and construction of electronic circuits for teaching and research groups. He also spent one day a week completing his training at Training 2000.

Ashley’s manager and Senior Electronics Technician, Stephen Holt, said: “Ashley’s award is indeed a credit to him and I’d like to pass on my congratulations. He achieved and maintained a high level throughout his formal qualifications.

“It has a been a positive and satisfying experience for the Physics Department taking on apprentices, so much so we are in the process of taking on two more for a start in September 2017.

“We had a tremendous response of 59 applicants for the two posts and look forward to having two more young people in the Department in the near future.”
