The Graduate College is located on Alexandra Park, adjacent to the main University campus, and there are a variety of accommodation types available. Many postgraduates will live on campus, though equally many will favour off campus accommodation in the city centre.
Once our application site opens in the spring we will send an email to all students that have accepted a place on a course, inviting them to create an account, and then apply for accommodation. You must have confirmed your place with the University before you are able to make an application.
If you are a short-term exchange student or sponsored student, please provide these details on your application.
Check with your department if you will be required to study away from the University at any point as this will affect your accommodation - let us know if this is the case when you apply.
Earlier applicants will stand a higher chance of being allocated to their preferred choice of accommodation. Although we ask for your preferences you should be prepared to accept some concessions if we are unable to meet all of your criteria. Please notify us of any special circumstances regarding disabilities, medical conditions and allergies when you apply. You may wish to view details about adapted rooms for students with disabilities here.
As most rooms have private shower facilities you are most likely to be offered this type of accommodation.
You are guaranteed a single place on campus for your first year of study if the following criteria have been met:
You are registered on a full time course of at least 9 months duration starting in October; you have firmly accepted the offer of a place via Postgraduate Admissions and paid any course/department deposit as required; you have submitted an application for accommodation by 15 August (if from outside the EU) or 1 August (UK & EU students).
If you miss the deadline, we cannot guarantee to be able to offer you accommodation.
If your course doesn't start in October we can't guarantee to accommodate you, though we would hope to be able to. Please contact us with any queries.
We will send your offer of accommodation by email, and you can check the status of your application in your online account. You must respond to the offer within 10 days if you wish to accept the room offered, by following the instructions given. When you click to accept the offer you are accepting the terms and conditions of the contract, and you must pay the £200 deposit to secure the room (or £275 for a family flat). If we don't hear from you within the 10 days we will be unable to hold a room for you.
If you reject the offer we will be unable to offer you another room. If you have a question about the offer, please contact us by email.
If we can't meet all your preferences we will make an alternative offer. You may choose not to accept this, but please consider it carefully before you do.
The contract you accept is legally binding, and sets down the conditions of the agreement between yourself and the University. You cannot be released from it, and will be obliged to pay all residence charges relating to the contract. You must therefore budget carefully, making sure you have enough money to manage during your time in Lancaster. Please make sure you understand this completely before applying for or accepting a room.
You will be asked to pay the deposit with a credit card via our secure website, in order to accept the offer. This is fully refundable at the end of the tenancy providing the accommodation is left as you found it, and that no deductions have been made during the year. Financial regulations mean that we can only refund deposits to the person that made the original payment.
If we can't offer you a room in Graduate College you may be referred to another part of the campus, or the off-campus housing office. Remember, we can't guarantee to house families on campus.
If you are attending one of the study skills and English language courses in August or September you will be housed with the other students on the course for its duration. You will then move into your permanent room at the end of the course, when you are notified that it is ready.
Other than that, you should note that the accommodation will be closed for cleaning and maintenance immediately before the start of your tenancy, and it will not be possible to take up residence earlier than the date set out on your contract. Please check this before making travel plans. The Lancaster Tourism Centre may be able to help you find temporary accommodation if you need it.
