Doctorate Extension


What is the Doctorate Extension?

The Doctorate Extension is an extension to a Tier 4 visa for PhD students to remain within the UK for 12 months after completing the PhD in order to gain work experience or find a permanent job.  


Who can apply?

Only students satisfying the following criteria can apply:

  • You must have valid Tier 4 leave to remain, and the expected completion date of your course must not be later that your current visa expiry date;
  • You must not have been awarded your PhD yet;
  • But you must be within 60 days of the expected completion date.


How do I apply?

If you are interested in applying for this extension and you satisfy the eligibility criteria above, download an application pack from here. This contains:

  • a letter explaining more about the Doctorate Extension Scheme
  • a CAS request form and
  • a Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Agreement

Please fill in the CAS request form and the Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Agreement  and send to or hand it in at the Base.

When we receive this we will issue you with a CAS within the acceptable timescales and contact you to offer you help with your visa application. You must then apply for the visa within 3 months of receiving the CAS.


Do I need ATAS?

If you needed an ATAS certifcate for your previous Tier 4 then you will need to apply to renew your ATAS for your Doctorate Extension visa application unless you make your application within 28 days of the expected end date of your course.


Can my immediate family apply as my dependants under the Tier 4 (Doctorate Extension)?

Yes. The Doctorate Extension is Tier 4 and works in the same way as other Tier 4 extensions.
